On August 3rd, nineteen high school students from Staten Island were honored for their involvement in the Solar Car Challenge. The Solar Car Challenge is a national STEM Initiative project that gives high school students the chance to learn about planning, designing, engineering, building and racing solar cars. This group of students, from the Green Energy Staten Island Solar Club, was the only New York group to compete in this years competition. During this four-day Challenge, they created a fully-functional, solar-powered vehicle with a seat, roll cage, safety harness and turn signals.
The popularity and possibility of solar-powered cars is still growing, especially on Staten Island. However, replacing a large bulk of today’s vehicles with solar-powered cars would make a huge positive impact on our environment. No electric motors means no emissions and less pollution. Approximately 27 percent of America’s greenhouse gas emissions come from our modes of transportation.
Our staff members are always looking to give back to the community and support groups like the Green Energy Staten Island Solar Club. Staten Island is filled with tons of motivated individuals who work hard to give back and make our world a better place to live. We currently serve on the board of more than five charitable organizations on Staten Island, New York.
